Reporting to the Prime Minister and working in close liaison with the President of the Republic’s office, the General Secretariat for Defence and National Security (SGDSN) assists the Head of Government in fulfilling his/her responsibilities in matters of national defence and security.
The SGDSN is responsible for :
secretarial support for high level interministerial meetings chaired by the Head of State, the Prime Minister or their chief collaborators ;
undertaking certain more central tasks, entrusted to departments of the Prime Minister because of their interministerial nature or because of institutional changes.
The SGDSN, together with the Cabinet Office (SGG) and the General Secretariat for European Affairs (SGAE), is one of the three main secretariat- generals used by the Prime Minister for the interministerial organisation and coordination of Government issues.
In addition to its permanent tasks, the SGDSN has seen its scope widen considerably, to include issues of national security in the broadest sense : it is now at the centre of French domestic and external security affairs.
The Secretary General for Defence and National Security is Mr. Francis DELON, appointed on 29th July 2004.
